Is this futon really made in Japan?

Yes. Every OFUTON KOBO shikibuton is handcrafted in our own workshop in Oyama, Tochigi, Japan, and certified under J Quality (certification No. K2600190003), which requires every step — from raw cotton to finished futon — to be completed in Japan. It is Made in Japan, not “Japanese-style.”

What is the difference between HIMARI and SORA?

HIMARI is our everyday shikibuton, about 10 cm thick — a firm, breathable, traditional Japanese floor mattress for daily sleeping. SORA is our flagship, about 12 cm with a five-layer construction that includes a wool blend, for a balanced, medium feel. Both are made by hand in Japan.

What is a shikibuton, and how do I use it?

A shikibuton is a traditional Japanese futon mattress designed to be laid directly on the floor, on a tatami platform, or on a bed frame. It gives firm, even support and can be folded and aired when not in use — a way of sleeping refined in Japan over centuries.

Can I use it on a bed frame?

Yes. A shikibuton works on the floor, on tatami, or on top of a slatted or platform bed frame. Many customers use it both ways.

How is it shipped, and how long does it take?

Your futon is packed at our workshop and shipped directly from Japan to your door by Japan Post — no middlemen and no overseas warehouse in between. International shipping is included in the price, and delivery typically takes about 10–14 days.

Will I have to pay customs or import duties?

Possibly. Any import duties or taxes charged by your country are the customer’s responsibility and are not included in the price. Amounts vary by destination, so please check your local rules if you are unsure.

What sizes are available?

Our shikibuton are made in single and larger widths (for example, 100, 120, and 140 cm wide). Exact dimensions are listed on each product page.

How do I care for it?

Air your futon regularly — ideally in sunlight — and rotate it to keep it fresh. Detailed care guides are available on our main site, www.ofutonkobo.com.

Who makes OFUTON KOBO futons?

We have been making futons in Japan since 1873, now in our fifth generation. Each futon is finished by hand by our artisans — 18 craftspeople whose names and faces you can meet at www.ofutonkobo.com.

Which countries do you ship to?

We ship to around 20 markets across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Gulf, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. If your country appears at checkout, we can ship to you.
