SORA 宙 is OFUTON KOBO's fuller flagship expression of the Japanese shikibuton. Approx. 12 cm of loft and a 50% premium wool blend create deeper cushioning and a balanced medium feel, while the foldable form preserves the daily rhythm of Japanese floor sleep.

Current specification. Made and finished in Japan.

A rare, generously lofted Japanese shikibuton

Traditional shikibuton are known for a lower, grounded profile. SORA is deliberately more substantial. Its approximately 12 cm loft gives the surface a fuller presence without turning it into a permanent mattress. Lay it out for the night, then fold and air it when the room returns to daytime use.

The feel is balanced rather than overly soft: generous at first contact, steady through the night, and resilient enough for regular folding.

At a glance

  • Approx. 12 cm overall loft
  • Balanced medium feel
  • 50% premium wool and 50% polyester fiber filling
  • 100% cotton cover
  • Tri-fold design for airing and storage
  • Single and Double sizes
  • Made and finished in Japan

A fuller SORA, framed in gray

Calm gray piping around all four edges gives SORA's warm ivory surface a quieter, more contemporary outline. The filling combines 50% premium wool with 50% polyester fiber for natural warmth, breathability, and resilient comfort.

The foldable form remains easy to air and store after use.

Choose your size

SORA follows Japanese shikibuton sizing rather than the standard mattress and bedding sizes used in each market. Measure the floor, platform, or frame before ordering. Inch values are approximate references.

Single

200 x 100 x approx. 12 cm
78.7 x 39.4 x 4.7 in
Approx. 6 kg

A fuller flagship sleep surface for one person.

Double

200 x 140 x approx. 12 cm
78.7 x 55.1 x 4.7 in
Approx. 8 kg

A wider floor-sleeping surface with the same generous loft.

Because SORA is made with flexible fiber materials, finished dimensions, loft, and weight may vary slightly with measurement method, humidity, and production batch.

Where SORA fits

  • Tatami rooms: Lay it over clean, dry tatami for the most traditional Japanese setting.
  • Modern wood floors: Use a breathable moisture-control layer beneath it and air both regularly.
  • Living rooms and studios: Lay it out at night, then fold it away to return the room to daytime use.
  • Platforms and ventilated frames: Use a firm, level, well-supported base with enough airflow beneath the bedding.

Avoid damp, plush, sagging, uneven, or poorly ventilated surfaces.

Made in Japan

SORA is assembled, sewn, inspected, and finished at the OFUTON KOBO workshop in Oyama, Tochigi. The warm ivory cotton surface, premium wool blend, and gray piping are brought together with the close attention expected from a specialist Japanese bedding atelier.

Everyday care

  1. Keep it dry. Use a dry, breathable base and prevent moisture from remaining beneath the shikibuton.
  2. Air it often. Fold or raise it regularly and air both surfaces in suitable weather.
  3. Use both sides. Turn and rotate it periodically to distribute normal pressure and settling.

Do not machine-wash, soak, or wash the whole shikibuton. Use a removable sheet or cover for everyday protection.
